Buying a prescription pair of shooting glasses will cost you a substantial amount of money, just like buying subscription sunglasses will cost you a fair bit of money too, the difference is that the solution to the sunglasses problem is to simply buy a pair of clip-on sunglasses. That solution isn’t possible when it comes to shooting glasses, in order to offer sufficient levels of protection against impacts a pair of shooting glasses needs to meet certain safety regulations.
Clip-on safety lenses aren’t feasible because of the number of people who will choose to clip them on to frames which do not have similar safety ratings, and the result is your safety being compromised. There is another solution however, and that is to simply buy fit-over shooting glasses! These are almost a hybrid between shooting goggles and shooting glasses and are simply worn over the top of your prescription glasses, potentially saving you a small fortune!
There are a number of great brands producing shooting glasses which are designed to fit over your prescription glasses and they cater for all budgets too, perhaps the best low cost pair of fit over shooting glasses on the market are the Allen Company Fit Over Shooting Glasses pictured above left which are sold for around $11 plus free shipping.
In fact most of the best fit over shooting glasses will give you change from $20, the exception being Global Vision Outfitter glasses with photochromic lenses which retail at around $70 but can be yours for just $55 with free shipping if purchased from Amazon (pictured right). Photocromic lenses lighten as the sun goes down, and darken as the sun gets brighter, such a smart and convenient alternative to owning several different pairs of shooting glasses.
Buying fit-over shooting glasses just makes sense financially, but by all means spend hundreds of dollars on prescription shooting glasses if that’s what you would rather do! Shooting glasses need to be replaced every two years however, no matter how much you spend on them, light scratches and erosion of the Polycarbonate effects the clarity of vision.
Whilst your prescription may not change for a decade, meaning that you don’t need to change your normal prescription glasses with glass lenses, you would still need to buy five pairs of prescription shooting glasses during that ten year period – that’s why it makes sense for any glasses wearer to spend as little as possible on fit-over glasses such as the Howard Leight HL102 Sharp-Shooter Shooting Glasses shown left which are yours for as little as $12 with free shipping!
